an opening night artist reception for Michael Jenkins will be held on Saturday, June 5th from 6pm - 9pm. The event is free and open to the public.

The Asher Love Studio + Gallery presents “POWER\plants”, a series of oil paintings by self-taught Chattanooga artist, Michael Jenkins. This body of work, all painted on reclaimed wood combining oil paints, acrylic and spray paints, consists of imagery that forces the perspective between manmade power/energy production and its relationship to the natural environment. There are factories, nuclear plants, power poles and trees. Even the exhibition’s title is a comment on this relationship/lordship in a struggle for dominance. An opening night reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, June 5th from 6:00pm-9pm. The event is free and open to the public. The Asher Love Gallery is located in the newly revitalized business district of downtown St. Elmo directly behind Pasha's Coffee House and Blacksmith's Bistro at the foot of Lookout Mountain. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday 1-7pm, Saturdays 11-6 and Sundays 12noon-5pm.

Jenkins was born in Mississippi, grew up in Alabama, and moved to Chattanooga 10 years ago. He is self-taught having received no formal training. His inspiration comes from gritty graffiti and museum works of fine art. Jenkins paints with most all types of paints, but oil is preferred. His current work is a mixture of oil, acrylic and spray paint with a focus on oil. His work has shown at many popular venues and art festivals in Chattanooga and Atlanta.

Started and completed in three hours, the painting was sold immediately following the demonstration. Gill is also auctioning a pastel sketch he did in preparation for the live session. The Asher Love Studio + Gallery presents “Seeds,” a series of abstract paintings by Daniel Liam Gill. In conjunction with the art exhibit, which opened May 1^st and runs thru May 30^th, the artist will present a painting demonstration in the gallery during the exhibition on Sunday, May 23^rd from 2pm-5pm. The session will last for three hours, where Gill will create an oil sketch from a clothed model reclining on the gallery's red leather sofa. This will be a one of a kind piece and no prints will be made from the original. The artwork will measure 14” x 18” on wood and will be auctioned to the show attendees only. You must be present during the painting demonstration session to purchase the piece. This is a rare and unique opportunity for art collectors to price and acquire an original work of art directly from an artist. It is also a chance to see the deep and diverse talents of Gill, whose beautiful Seeds exhibition of abstract paintings is drastically different from his talents as a figurative painter. My work explores the connection between the artist and the viewer, the energy exchanged between the two.

It's about emotional response, tactile, visceral, abstract, created with a limited color palette, mixing the colors on the surface. It's as much a conversation as a picture, a snapshot of emotion, a thread running between the observer and the observed.

Daniel Liam Gill relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee from Portland, Oregon through the ArtsMove grant. He is currently working on the series' Connective Tissue<> and Seeds.

Daniel was born in American Falls, Idaho in the fall of 1961. He spent his formative years in the American South as an illustrator, graphic designer and art director. Daniel taught illustration design at Portfolio Center in Atlanta, Georgia and illustration at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. He co-founded The Illustrators’ Jam with PNCA and Raw Visceralia, an art experience.

Daniel studied pastels with Lee Bomhoff , an Atlanta artist.

He honed his figure drawing skills in Portland, Oregon, creating hundreds of works over several years. Daniel graduated to oils in 2006 and started the series Connective Tissue in 2007.

“Myths are stories of our search through the ages for truth, for meaning, for significance. We all need to tell our story and to understand our story...and we all need help in our passage from birth to life and then to death. We need for life to signify, to touch the eternal, to understand the mysterious, to find out who we are.” Bill Moyers here speaks of our birth to death search for personal identity and the help we all need to find that identity. We are born into; raised within; guided toward; pushed toward personal and cultural identities which may remain with us for our entire lives. They become part of the story of our lives, and then the myths which we each create for ourselves, complicates the narrative further. The subjective modern myth and the search for personal identity within 21st century are the themes I will explore further in this new series of paintings. The works in this series were made possible in part by a grant from Create|Here.

a b o u t t h e a r t i s t

Holsomback is a well-known artist and art department faculty member at Chattanooga State Community College in Chattanooga, Tennessee. While being the primary painting instructor at Chattanooga State, Mr. Holsomback is also a productive painter himself, having a considerable regional and national exhibition record. His work has been selected for exhibitions in such venues as: the San Diego Art Institute, the University of Mobile, the Stage Gallery in Merrick, NY, the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, AL, and Nassau College in Nassau, NY. Mr. Holsomback’s paintings and collages are found in the holdings of numerous private, corporate and government collections, including most notably, the corporate law offices of King and Spalding of Atlanta, GA, and the Park Avenue offices of Dr. Jacqueline Dryfoos of New York, NY. He continues to live in north Georgia with his wife and a houseful of rescued cats and dogs, teaching, painting and observing the changing world around him.

Born in rural north Georgia in 1961, Michael Holsomback is the self described son of a son of a white sharecropper, as his father’s parents lived in a string of depression era sharecropper shacks. The fields may have been segregated but the poverty was colorblind. It is through his own veil of poverty, and the illnesses which arise within it, that Holsomback has sharpened his vision as a painter. He has seen and participated in the long and often painful journey of southern cultural evolution. Holsomback’s passion for art developed early, fostered by the sacrifice and support of his parents, he earned a MFA degree in painting in 1989, and began his teaching career shortly thereafter.

This is the final weekend of Paul Fontana's wonderful collection of eyes and stories. A peculiar assortment of characters from Paul's personal photography of world travels, art markets and public places in-between. Images were transferred on to wood and canvas, some pigment-enhanced before or after printing/transferring., creating a collection as unique as the eyes in each piece.

"Eye of The Beholder" has been a wonderful success for Paul and the gallery. Come celebrate with us on Saturday evening from 6pm-8pm.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I see opportunities for photographs constantly. The minutia of daily life are filled light and shadow, textures and color or the lack of it.

I've often wished for a bionic eye, which would photograph what i'm seeing with a single blink. My interest in taking pictures of eyes began with photographing my own. I took part in a photo project called 365 days, in which I had to take a self portrait every day for a year. Often, the reflection of my own eye was the subject of the daily shot. The project increased my interest in many aspects of the human face, but none as much as the eye.

I began experimenting with photographic image transfers onto wood after reading online about the transfer properties of acrylic gel media. Getting a consistently professional outcome proved to be a challenge, but after many trials and errors, I can usually count on being successful with most attempts. What intrigued me about the process, was that after the paper backing of the photograph was removed, the remaining image layer was so thin as to allow the grain of the wood to show through and become part of the original image. Though much of the in-between work is repetitious and tedious, the preparing of the photograph and the finished product are most rewarding.

ARTIST BIO

Paul Fontana was born in New York City and lived there until his teen years. He made his way to 23 acres of wooded heaven in Cohutta, Georgia by way south Florida.

He honed his photographic skills as a U.S.N. Photographer’s Mate aboard 2 different aircraft carriers, photographing mostly mundane images of shipboard life with the occasional significantly important events: the Gemini-V recovery being the most notable.

Many decades passed before Paul’s love of photography would give way to painting. After retiring from teaching he has the luxury of balancing his time between the two.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Eye of the Beholder consists of image transfers on wood or canvas. A combination of digital art and straightforward photography is arranged to focus, so to speak, on that most miraculous organ, the eye. The show is composed of small, single pieces or multiple arrangements on wood and canvas pulled over stretcher bars or blocks of wood and, at times, burnished with acrylic pigment, which adds additional texture.

Breast as Brush Preview opens Thurs Feb4

Monday, February 1, 2010 (Chattanooga, TN) - The Asher Love Studio + Gallery will be showing nearly 100 individual works on paper during the BREAST AS BRUSH special exhibit event this month. All works will be sold during a silent auction and can be previewed beginning this Thursday, February 4th. The auction preview will continue during regular gallery hours through February 14th and culminate in a silent auction and reception on Monday, February 15th from 6pm-8pm.

In order to bring about a more holistic view of self, breast cancer survivors were invited to participate in a painting experience. The Body as Brush group held painting sessions at the Rivoli Art Mill in November, December and January to provide an aesthetic challenge towards seeing form connected to beauty through color. The resulting paintings are the work of these survivors and their friends. The Breast as Brush exhibition is the collection of these works of art on paper and canvas to be sold at a silent auction in support of the local team participating in the Susan G. Komen Foundation 3 Day-For A Cure event taking place in Atlanta on October 22-24th. This exhibit event is the group's first fundraiser of the year and they will receive 100% of the proceeds.

Bid cards will be available at the gallery during the two preview weeks and all are encouraged to submit early bids prior to auction night. On auction night on the 15th, the silent bidding will continue with most minimum bids opening at $25. In addition to the works on paper, two sculpture installations will also be sold at auction. The two sculptures, titled "Ravaged" and "Ravishing", are made of aluminum and surface-treated with fire and burnt paint. Aluminum ribbons are swirled around one another in each 7'H x 3'W freestanding piece. The elegant shapes of the ribbon forms are texturized by the harsh surface treatments to represent the ugliness of cancer against the beauty of the female form.

Check card, credit cards, checks and cash will all be processed the evening of the auction and receipts generated directly from the Susan G. Komen website. The Asher Love Gallery is open Thursday thru Saturday 11am-5pm and Sunday 12noon - 4pm and is located at 3914 St. Elmo Avenue in the heart of the revitalized St. Elmo business district directly behind Pasha's Coffee House and Blacksmiths Bistro.

Special gallery hours will be extended on the night of the Auction. The event is free and open to the public. "The picture is of a vast farm field in Western Colorado, an image I made this summer while on a cross country bicycle ride with my girlfriend. This trip marked the mid point of a year of nomadic rambles for us. We lived pretty much rent free this year and have been coast to coast twice with a couple of trips to the Gulf thrown in. We have been looking forward to settling down in a town for some time now and it feels really good to be somewhere and begin to be a part of the community. The vast field then, represents our unknown future in Chattanooga and the empty rows represent the potential for anything to grow. We are both looking to be vendors at the farmers market this year so that might be a literal interpretation of our hopes for the new year."

we make resolutions because we believe in this ritual-as-solution to kickstarting a new resolve in one direction or another for one reason or another. some people say 'eh, i don't make resolutions,' with a dismissive tone and detachment not unlike those who call New Year's Eve, (or st. patrick's day), "amateur night" for partiers. Resolutions on January 1 are for some, lip service to self reflection. After all, are we not flowing and growing all year? But for those of us who need an anchor like a new year to refresh our reasons for rebooting our resolve, we announce the next rolling exhibit at Asher Love Gallery.

The Asher Love Gallery seeks submissions from the most creative photographers, filmmakers, video artists and multi-media artists for a unique exhibit featuring imagery and ideas about the baby Jesus. Literal, conceptual, political and abstracted views are welcome to apply. From the most reverent to totally random, we aim to produce an unusual and compelling group show while capturing a sense of the season in rather unexpected ways. The exhibit will represent a diverse selection of artists who are working with photographs and/or moving images as their primary medium.
